About Us
In 1958 Sterling State Bank opened its doors in Austin, Minnesota, as a newly developed, locally owned bank. Our location, alongside a local pharmacy and movie theatre, established one of the first commercial “strip malls†in Minnesota. Sterling State Bank helped define Austin’s “Sterling Center†by conveniently placing our full-service bank amidst local, growing businesses.
Building upon solid capital, good people and sturdy relationships, we’ve broadened our financial services to include insurance, and commercial and mortgage lending.
Sterling State Bank continues to develop state-of-the-art technology processes and rigorous security systems to serve our customer and staff expectations. Today, Sterling provides professional opportunities to over 100 highly skilled employees, and has established nine additional locations throughout Minnesota. Sterling has been careful to preserve the qualities that determined our initial success: a sincere desire to know our customers, a deep commitment to giving back, and recognition that we’re only as good as the people we hire (and we hire the best).
Sterling State Bank is still locally owned and operated. Denzil McNeilus and Thomas Winkels (both Minnesota boys) are the majority owners of the bank. Justin McNeilus, son of Denzil, works in the banks full time. Denzil, Tom and Justin do not believe in projecting an imaginary wall between ownership and customers; they invite each Sterling State Bank customer to stop in and say, “Hi!â€
